Monorails of North America

Philadelphia Zoo, Pennsylvania

 Opened 1969

1.6 km

2 stations

The Philadelphia Zoo Safari Monorail is billed as the first zoo monorail at America's first zoo, although the Ueno Monorail was actually the first zoo monorail in the world. The system was installed by Universal Design Limited, and is similar to the monorail that ran at Hemisfair '68 in San Antonio, Texas. The Safari Monorail began its service with three trains; one each in red, blue and green. The green train has since been retired. The monorail track loops the zoo and stops at a North and South Station. This beautiful photograph was taken by TMS member Andy Andersen.
